Wu Peter Tang (唐武) – Erhu & Gaohu Soloist

Peter was born into a family of musicians. His father is Yubin Tang, a famous musician in China. Peter began studying Erhu at age of six, and later entered the music middle school of the Shen Yang Conservatory. In 1982 He entered the Chinese traditional musical Instrumental Department of Shenyang Conservatory, studied Erhu and Gaohu with Professor Zaishen Ren.

After graduation, Peter was recruited by the Central Singing and Dancing Ensemble, the top national official musical performance organization in Beijing, China.

Peter participated in numerous important musical events nationally as a member of this top-rated performance group. He also joined the Chinese International Artist Delegation.

Peter came to Philadelphia in 2001,funded by his Chinese music ensemble. Peter has continued to contribute his musical talents to serve American society.

As the musical director and Manager, Peter led his group participated governmental, community, university, corporate and International events.

Peter is also the music consultant under the Philadelphia School District for their Children’s Chinese music program.
The events include:

  • In 2007, Pre-concert Series for Tan Dun “ The Map” for the Philadelphia Orchestra in Verizon Hall Philadelphia.
  • Pennsylvania Longwood Gardens’ Annual Chrysanthemum Arts Festival. Philadelphia TV WYBE Chinese music program.
  • Philadelphia Tourism Marketing: Voices of Philadelphia Program. Musicopia ‘s Chinese music and dance program.
  • Guest speaker and performer of Rowan University.
  • Chinese Music Presentation for Department of World Music, Penn State University Delaware County.
  • Special guest to participate in the Dong Jianhua China & Canada Friendship Foundation event in Montreal of Canada.
  • In 2004, Peter won the PEW Music Arts Award in the United States, and received $50,000 personal award.

Chinese music is a treasured media which expresses its sense of aesthetic harmony. With a revolving history dating back some four thousand years. Many ancient classical and modern compositions provide nourishment to people’s mind and spirit through beautiful sounds of music. The unique instruments in Chinese music are an example of the great human creativity and exquisite craftsmanship.

Peter Tang’s Chinese Ensemble is an active professional Chinese music group in the Greater Philadelphia and Tri-State areas. It was founded by Wu Peter Tang, former Erhu(Chinese violin) soloist of Beijing Central Government’s Singing and Dancing Ensemble. Peter lead his group of professional musicians from China to offer a rich variety of Chinese musical performance, entertainment service, instrument teaching and Chinese music Education Programs to the region. Their goal is to present and to preserve the traditional and contemporary Chinese musical arts with indigenous instruments in order to promote the greater cultural understanding and enjoyment.

Our Group

Peter Tang, erhu and gaohu soloist was born in Shenyang, northeast China. Following the footsteps of his father, Yu Bin Tang, a prestigious Chinese classical musician, Peter received his early musical education at the Shenyang Music Conservatory, Shenyang China. He majored in Erhu and Gaohu playing. After his graduations, he was recruited by the Central Singing and Dancing Ensemble, the top national official musical performance organization in Beijing, China. He had participated in musical events throughout China and in international tours with the Chinese International Artist Delegation. Peter moved to Philadelphia in 1997. Since then, Peter has founded his own Chinese music ensemble.

Peter Tang’s Chinese Ensemble has participated in numerous events in the greater Philadelphia and Tri-State areas by since the Years of 2002. Their performance includes: Chinese Music Pre-concert series for Mr. Tan Dun “The Map” with Philadelphia Orchestra 2004, Verizon Hall, Kimmel Center; The Chinese New Year Celebration for Asian Businese Alliance 2006, University of Pennsylvania Art Mesume Annual Chinese New Year Celebration, Li Ming Chinese School Chinese New Year Celebration 2006; Chinese music presentation for Pennsylvania State College Delaware County; Sunoco Co “Welcome America” Program on Broad Street. Leopold Mozart Academy Chinese music concert, Longwood Garden Chrysanthemum Festival Chinese Music Concert 2006 and 2007.
